Kane School

1. Kane school where I attended 2. picnic lunch at school picnic

My next stepping stone I want to zero in on is my school.

The school was a two room school with a small high school in the basement. I want to remain as positive as possible but a few negatives also need to be mentioned as they affected who I have become and how I manage life.

It seems the first four years went well enough. Grades 5-8 were more of a struggle. I was somewhat overweight and so received quite a bit of teasing. I was not good at sports because we just did not do these things at home.

The other girl in my class had brothers who taught her to play and my being so inept showed up even more. My nickname of champion baseball player(champ) stuck for a number of years. I ignored a lot of the teasing and read lots of books, etc.

Being in a good church helped me so much. It did result in me feeling insecure many times and feeling inferior.

In high school things were different. In grade 10 we moved into a new building and for grade 12 the Rosefarm high school joined ours in Kane giving us a total of 24 students and two teachers to teach all the subjects in grades 9-12.

Looking back I can appreciate the enormous job these men had to do.

On Fridays we had 4-H sewing and the boys did woodwork. I enjoyed learning this art and the outings that were part of it. Some community ladies were our teachers.

A high light was our school picnic at the end of June. There were lots of races in the morning, a picnic lunch which each family prepared their own(and what a lunch Mom would make). There was lots of visiting with friends over our lunch. After lunch there were ball games, visiting and of course a canteen.. It was a real community event.

The year I took grade 12 was the only year we had grade 12 in our school.(the next year the high school went to Lowe Farm).

So, I am the only one to go to this school for 12 years.

On the whole I look back on my school days and remember the good times we had, the love of learning that was nurtured

and I know that the trials I experienced have also helped shape my character.

Much later I learn a saying that I trust can be said of me, Do not waste your trials but grow through them. I trust that is what I have done in a positive way and am a better person for it.
