Winnipeg- next stepping stone
Leaving Amsterdam for a Winnipeg school was definitely a step of faith. I thought this was what I was suppose to do.
I still didn't have a school when I moved to Winnipeg at the end of June and started summer school. I was the middle of July when I was assigned a grade two class in the Oakenwald School, the same school my friend and roommate, Evelyn Harder was teaching.
It was very different than teaching a one room school in the country but I learnt a lot and enjoyed the children very much.
one thing that was new for me was teaching math with the Quesonair Method. it was fun and amazing to see how quickly the kids learnt so much math.
One thing that stands out was the bomb threat from Cuba
that year. At school we did drills of what to do in case a bomb was dropped on us. One day the siren would go for a drill
in the middle of the day and the kids would have to hurry home.
At a time like this some of the teachers were so petrified they could hardly teach. what amazed Evelyn Harder and me was the peace we felt knowing the Lord was with us. I think they couldn't figure us out.
During the winter I taught a CEF Good News club at my Uncle John & Aunt Nettie's home in the westend of Winnipeg. I always remember how their son Ken would bring his friends. One day one of them accepted Jesus. After when we were sitting in the livingroom Ken came in so excited and remarked
"That was a home run." It was such a blessing to see his zeal.
I went to the Gospel Mennonite Church again and made new friends. The importance of a church family can't be over emphasized.
One of the differences in a city school was more administration and people coming in to check on you more.
So, I wasn't at all sad when the school didn't have a grade 2 classroom for me the next year.
After checking with a few schools I accepted a position in Grunthal in a grade 2 class room for the next year.
What amazes me 'is how the Lord guides each step of the way even if we can't understand why something is happening. I praise the Lord again and again for guiding me.
