The Perfect Tree
Getting the right Christmas tree usually proved to be an adventure. George would go into the community pasture south of our farm to find a tree. As the family grew it became an outing for Dad and the kids.
When we were first married, my brother Eddie was a teenager. So George and Eddie decided they would go and get 2 trees on evening. (it was around -25 to -30 that night but no wind and clear.) My parents and Eddie came over and then George and Ed loaded the ski-do on the truck and they headed out.
They unloaded the ski-do on the road about 1 mile from the neighbor's yard about 3-4 miles south of our place and headed into the bush. After searching for awhile they had the two trees and were starting to get chilly. They headed back to the truck and got it started but it heated up because the radiator was frozen. So they phoned from the neighbors and Dad headed out to rescue them. On the way our truck heated up as well but he drove it to where they were. The neighbor helped them get going.
When they got home, they realized one of the trees had fallen off and they had to go look for it and found it.
Not every year was such an adventure, but it was always nice to have a real tree. It was one part of Christmas the family enjoyed and helped with.
Then of course we had to set it up and decorate it at home.
Family traditions are so good and are treasured memories we carry with us. I am so thankful for the memories I have.
God has been so good to us through good times and bad. the tough times made us appreciate the good times.
