Grandma Rodgers
Grandma Rodgers was the rock solid cornerstone of her family. Her faith and courage in the face of adversity was commendable.
She grew up on her family farm -the Emerson farm south of MacGregor and a was an integral part of the family farm until she married Arthur Rodgers at the age of 38
( Arthur was 48). They settled on the Rodgers farm south of the Emerson`s in the hills. They were blessed with 3 boys and this kept them busy on their farm. The boys went to Sighthill School and church was at the Rosehill school or in town.
When George was 12 years old, his father got cancer and after a lengthy battle with this illness passed away at the age of 68 leaving grandma with boys ages 18, 16, and 12. Together they managed quite well. I consider her very brave to raise these teenage boys and keep the farm going. Grandma`s faith must have sustained her through these years.
John was the first to get married and lived only about a mile west of the yard. When Bill got married they moved in with her and George and lived there for quite a few years. They had 4 children by the time they moved to Lavenham.
George and Grandma lived together in the farm house and the boys farmed together. They kept her as part of the farm as long as possible.
When George and I got married in 1966 she was 74 years old.
She didn`t want to leave the farm so we lived with her for a year and a half. I found this challenging at times but the Lord helped me in this time.
Then we bought a house trailer (8x 3 2) and later a bigger one. We lived on the yard and she could stay in her house.
She continued to live there for 15 years. She was always there for the grandchildren and enjoyed having them over. The kids knew there were always cookies in her cupboard. Very often she went to town and church with us.
After a number of years I found myself with resentment in my heart towards her and I knew I needed to deal with this if I wanted the Lord to use us and bless us in ministry. After a struggle I went to her and asked for forgiveness. The Lord was taking edges off my character. Shortly after this the door opened for us to have Bible study with families south of our place. Those were good times.
She had a great influence on her family and I know she prayed for us. Her faith took her through the hard times and she left a lasting legacy for her family. I think that those prayers are still being answered today. She also faithfully sent money to missionaries for many years.
When she was 90 years old she couldn`t live by herself anymore. and since we didn`t have room she moved to Bill and Bernice`s at Lavenham and lived there for another 9 years.
Here is another example of a godly woman and her influence on her family and those around her. How thankful I am for her love and her faith.
