Dunebuggies and motorcycles
Mark and cousin Lily on the dunebuggy
As the boys grew older, George had this dream of building a dunebuggy with his boys. So they started looking for parts and gradually got it together. Later they built and an improved version of it.
They had a lot of fun with it, giving rides or running errands around the farm.
When we had Life Springs the dunebuggy rides were part of the day time activities many times. What better way to see nature around the camp and surrounding areas. It could go down trails other vehicles could go and was fun to go exploring with it.
One story bears telling; Barry was to take lunch out to the field where dad was combing. He put gas in the dune buggy but forgot to put the cap on the gas tank. George saw him coming across the field with fire popping on to the field as the gas jumped out of the tank at each bump and landed on the spark plug. Now the field was on fire and was endangering the crop and combine.
George quickly drove the combine unto a black field. George's brother Bill and his boys were nearby and came to help put out the fire before much damage was done.
It was funny to watch the boys when dating. Their girlfriends had to each go for rides with them and sometimes get quite dirty, but it was all in fun.
Later they had motorcycles for a while. This seemed to be part of growing up, even though Barry still seems to have a love for them. I was always thankful no one was hurt during this time.
I'm sure they have good memories for these times.
I'm sure they have
